🌿 Philodendron hederaceum ‘Scandens’ in Bowl Pot — Heartleaf Philodendron

Philodendron ‘Scandens’, often referred to as the Heartleaf Philodendron, is a beloved classic in indoor plant styling, celebrated for its lush, trailing habit and neat, heart-shaped leaves in a rich, glossy green. Native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, this fast-growing and forgiving plant is a favourite for both beginners and collectors. When planted in a wide, shallow bowl pot, its elegant vines cascade beautifully, making it ideal for styling on shelves, consoles, tabletops, or hanging ledges. With its timeless foliage and low-maintenance character, Scandens adds soft greenery and effortless charm to any room.

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Indoors: Prefers bright, indirect light for optimal growth.

  • Low light: Tolerated well, making it ideal for north-facing rooms or shaded corners.

  • Direct sun: Avoid, as it can scorch the leaves or fade the colour.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 18–26°C (65–79°F)

  • Minimum temperature: Keep above 15°C (59°F)

  • Humidity: Tolerant of typical household humidity. Will benefit from slightly increased humidity but does not require it.

💧 Watering Needs

  • Watering frequency: Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy.

  • Winter: Reduce watering slightly as growth slows.

  • Tip: In bowl pots, check drainage regularly — the shallow shape can retain more moisture near the roots.

🪴 Soil & Bowl Potting Notes

  • Soil type: Use a well-draining, light aroid mix — houseplant compost mixed with perlite and bark is ideal.

  • Pot type: Grows beautifully in wide, shallow bowl pots, allowing vines to drape softly over the edges.

  • Drainage: Use a pot with drainage holes or a nursery liner inside a decorative bowl to prevent waterlogging.

🌱 Feeding

  • Growing season (spring–summer): Feed every 4–6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser.

  • Autumn–winter: Feed every 6–8 weeks or pause if growth slows.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Pruning: Trim as needed to control shape, encourage bushiness, or remove leggy growth.

  • Leaf care: Wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain leaf shine.

  • Growth habit: Naturally trailing — ideal for hanging or bowl displays, or training up small supports.

🌾 Propagation

  • Stem cuttings: Very easy to propagate in water or soil. Snip below a node and root in a warm, bright location.

  • Great for creating fuller bowls: Combine several cuttings for a lusher display.

🐛 Pests & Problems

  • Common pests: Aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs in very dry or neglected conditions.

  • Symptoms: Pale leaves, sticky residue, or slow growth.

  • Treatment: Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap and adjust care conditions as needed.

  • Common issues:

    • Leggy growth: Typically due to low light.

    • Yellowing leaves: Often caused by overwatering.

🧤 Toxicity & Safety

  • Toxicity: Toxic if ingested by pets or humans. Contains calcium oxalates which may irritate.

  • Precaution: Keep out of reach of children and animals.

🏡 Decor Use & Styling Tips

  • Best in bowl pots for:

    • Shelf styling, where it adds gentle movement and greenery

    • Centrepieces on coffee tables, sideboards, or consoles

    • Home offices and bedrooms where calming green foliage brings warmth

  • Combines beautifully with textured ceramics, light woods, or minimalist pots

  • A timeless trailing plant that suits modern, boho, and classic interiors alike

Plastic Nursery Pots: All our plants are supplied in practical plastic nursery pots. If you prefer a more decorative option, we offer a range of stylish pots available for purchase separately.

Non-Consumable: Please note that our plants are intended for ornamental purposes only unless specifically stated as edible. Ensure you check product descriptions carefully if you are looking for edible varieties.

Variable Heights: The height of our plants can vary by approximately +/- 10%. This natural fluctuation ensures you receive a unique and healthy specimen.

Plant Pot Sizes: Pot sizes may vary by approximately +/- 1cm. To ensure a proper fit, we recommend selecting a decorative pot that is 1-2cm larger than the stated plant pot size. For instance, if you purchase a plant in a 17cm pot, a 18 - 19cm decorative pot would be ideal.

Quarantining: All our houseplants are regularly sprayed with a preventative systemic bug treatment. We do our best to ensure a bug free growing environment however sometimes these can unfortunately be missed, as such we always recommend quarantining plants when they first enter your home and checking them upon arrival for bugs.
