Begonia pavonina, also known as the peacock begonia or the iridescent begonia, is a stunning and unique plant native to Borneo. Its mesmerizing iridescent blue-green leaves make it a popular choice among plant enthusiasts. This care guide will provide you with all the information you need to keep your Begonia pavonina happy and healthy.

Light:
Begonia pavonina thrives in bright, indirect light. It prefers filtered sunlight or partial shade, as direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves. Placing the plant near an east or west-facing window with sheer curtains is ideal. If you notice the leaves losing their vibrant color or becoming pale, it may be an indication that the plant is not receiving enough light.

Temperature:
This begonia species prefers warm temperatures ranging between 70¬?F to 80¬?F (21¬?C to 27¬?C). It is essential to avoid sudden temperature fluctuations, as it can stress the plant. Ensure the plant is not placed near drafts or cold air conditioning vents. During winter, it is important to provide a consistent temperature for the plant, as it is sensitive to cold.

Humidity:
Begonia pavonina is native to a humid environment, so maintaining high humidity levels is crucial for its well-being. Place the plant on a tray with pebbles and water, ensuring the water level does not touch the pot's bottom. Alternatively, you can use a humidifier or mist the leaves regularly to mimic its natural habitat. Aim for around 50% to 60% humidity.

Watering:
Proper watering is crucial to prevent root rot in Begonia pavonina. The soil should be consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Use room temperature or lukewarm water to avoid shocking the plant. Water the plant thoroughly until water drains out of the bottom of the pot, and empty the excess water from the saucer. It is better to underwater than overwater this species.

Soil:
A well-draining soil mix is essential for Begonia pavonina. Use a mixture of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark to ensure adequate drainage. This will prevent the roots from sitting in soggy soil, which can lead to root rot. Adding some sphagnum moss to the mix can help retain moisture without sacrificing drainage.

Fertilizer:
During the growing season, which typically lasts from spring to early fall, feed your Begonia pavonina with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every two weeks. Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength to avoid burning the plant's roots. In winter, when the plant enters a period of dormancy, stop fertilizing or reduce it to once a month.

Pruning and Propagation:
Pruning is not necessary for Begonia pavonina, but you can remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain its appearance. If you wish to propagate your plant, it can be done through stem cuttings. Take a healthy stem cutting with a few leaves and dip the cut end into rooting hormone. Place the cutting in a well-draining soil mix and keep it warm and humid until roots develop.

Pests and Diseases:
Begonia pavonina is generally resistant to pests, but it can still be susceptible to mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Regularly inspect the plant's leaves, stems, and undersides for any signs of infestation. If pests are present, treat them with an appropriate insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew.

With proper care and attention, your Begonia pavonina will thrive and continue to display its stunning iridescent foliage. Enjoy this unique and beautiful plant in your home or garden!
