🌿 Begonia pavonina — Peacock Begonia

Begonia pavonina, commonly referred to as the Peacock Begonia, is a rare and enchanting species native to the cloud forests of Malaysia. Best known for its iridescent, metallic blue foliage that shimmers under the right lighting conditions, this begonia is a true collector’s gem. The iridescence becomes most pronounced under low light or filtered sunlight, where the leaves reflect a brilliant peacock blue—hence the name. The oval leaves are deep green with subtle venation during the day, transforming into glowing hues when light hits them from specific angles. This begonia is relatively compact and thrives in warm, humid environments with dappled light, making it perfect for terrariums, vivariums, or sheltered indoor displays. Although Begonia pavonina is more demanding than your average begonia, it rewards attentive care with truly extraordinary foliage and a mystical presence in any collection.

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Indoors: Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled shade.

  • Too much light: Harsh direct sun can scorch the foliage and reduce iridescence.

  • Too little light: Causes leggy growth and duller leaf colour.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 18–25°C (65–77°F)

  • Minimum temperature: Keep above 15°C (59°F) — highly sensitive to cold and draughts.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (60–80%). Ideal for terrariums or humid rooms with pebble trays or humidifiers.

💧 Watering Needs

  • Watering frequency: Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Water quality: Prefers filtered or rainwater to avoid mineral build-up.

  • Winter: Water less frequently, ensuring the plant is not sitting in damp, cool conditions.

🪴 Soil & Repotting

  • Soil type: Light, airy, and moisture-retentive. Use a mix of houseplant compost, orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss.

  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (5.5–6.5)

  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years in early spring. Avoid compacting the soil.

🌱 Feeding

  • Growing season (spring–summer): Feed every 4–6 weeks with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser.

  • Autumn–winter: Reduce feeding when growth slows.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Pruning: Pinch back leggy stems to encourage compact growth.

  • Leaf care: Avoid wetting the leaves directly. Clean gently with a soft brush or damp cloth if dusty.

  • Air circulation: Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues.

🌾 Propagation

  • Leaf or stem cuttings: Can be propagated from leaf sections or short stem cuttings in moist moss or compost.

  • Humidity is key for successful rooting — use a covered propagation box or high-humidity environment.

🐛 Pests & Problems

  • Common pests: Fungus gnats, mealybugs, and spider mites in dry conditions.

  • Diseases: Susceptible to powdery mildew or botrytis in stagnant or overly humid air.

  • Prevention: Provide good ventilation, avoid overwatering, and remove dead or decaying leaves promptly.

🧤 Toxicity & Safety

  • Toxicity: Mildly toxic to pets and humans if ingested. May cause irritation if consumed.

  • Precaution: Best kept out of reach of curious pets and children.

🏡 Indoor Care Highlights

  • A mesmerising foliage plant ideal for terrariums, display cases, or humid rooms.

  • Its shimmering blue sheen is most visible in low light or under artificial lighting with a cool spectrum.

  • Excellent as a showpiece in tropical plant collections or for customers looking for rare and unusual houseplants.

  • Pairs beautifully with other high-humidity plants like Fittonia, Selaginella, or Jewel Orchids.

  • Demanding but rewarding — best suited for attentive growers or collectors.
