Dracaena Care

Why is my Dracaena dropping leaves and how to solve it

Dracaena plants are generally low-maintenance houseplants, but sometimes they may experience issues like dropping leaves. Here are some common reasons why a Dracaena plant may drop leaves and how to solve the problem:

  1. Overwatering: Overwatering is one of the most common reasons for Dracaena leaves to drop. Too much water can cause root rot, which can lead to a weakened plant and ultimately cause leaves to drop. Check the soil moisture regularly and only water when the top inch of soil is dry. Be sure to allow excess water to drain away.

  2. Underwatering: Underwatering can also cause Dracaena leaves to drop. When the plant doesn't receive enough water, it can become stressed and lose leaves. Make sure you're watering your plant regularly and thoroughly. Check the soil moisture and water before it completely dries out.

  3. Low humidity: Dracaena plants prefer moderate to high humidity. When the air is too dry, the plant can become stressed and lose leaves. Increase the humidity around the plant by misting it regularly or placing a humidifier nearby.

  4. Low light: Dracaena plants prefer bright, indirect light. If your plant isn't receiving enough light, it may drop leaves. Move the plant to a brighter location, but avoid direct sunlight which can cause scorched leaves.

  5. Pests or diseases: Pests like spider mites and mealybugs can weaken a Dracaena plant and cause it to drop leaves. Inspect the plant regularly for signs of pests and treat with an insecticidal soap if necessary. Diseases like root rot can also cause leaves to drop. Ensure the soil is well-draining and avoid overwatering.

  6. Natural shedding: Sometimes, Dracaena plants may drop leaves as part of their natural growth cycle. Old leaves may turn yellow and drop off as new leaves emerge from the plant. This is a normal process and not a cause for concern.

In summary, Dracaena leaves may drop due to overwatering, underwatering, low humidity, low light, pests or diseases, or natural shedding. By identifying the underlying cause and taking appropriate action, you can help your Dracaena plant recover and stay healthy.
