Care Guide

  1. Light Requirements

    • Preferred: Bright, indirect light to maintain vibrant variegation and healthy growth.
    • Tolerates: Dappled shade but may lose variegation in low-light conditions.
    • Avoid: Direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
  2. Watering

    • Frequency: Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry to the touch.
    • Method: Water thoroughly, ensuring excess water drains out. Avoid waterlogged soil.
    • Caution: Overwatering can cause root rot, while underwatering may result in drooping leaves.
  3. Humidity

    • Thrives in high humidity levels (60–80%).
    • Place near a humidifier, mist occasionally, or set on a pebble tray to increase moisture.
  4. Temperature

    • Ideal Range: 18–26°C (65–80°F).
    • Avoid: Temperatures below 15°C (59°F) or exposure to drafts and sudden temperature changes.
  5. Soil

    • Requires a well-draining potting mix.
    • A mix of standard houseplant soil with added perlite or orchid bark works best.
  6. Fertilising

    • Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
    • No fertiliser is needed during dormancy in autumn and winter.
  7. Pruning

    • Remove yellowing or damaged leaves to encourage new growth.
    • Trim older stems as necessary to maintain a tidy appearance.
  8. Repotting

    • Repot annually in spring if the plant outgrows its current pot, using a slightly larger container.
    • For mature plants, top-dress the soil instead of repotting to avoid stress.
  9. Propagation

    • Propagate by division when repotting, separating offsets carefully and planting them in individual pots.
    • Use a well-draining mix and keep the soil lightly moist until new growth appears.
  10. Common Problems

    • Drooping Leaves: May indicate underwatering, overwatering, or low humidity. Adjust care as needed.
    • Yellowing Leaves: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
    • Brown Edges: Typically a sign of low humidity or inconsistent watering.
  11. Pests

    • Susceptible to spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs.
    • Wipe leaves clean with a damp cloth and treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
