Hoya obovata ‘Splash’ is a stunning and rare variety of Hoya obovata, known for its thick, round, succulent-like leaves speckled with silvery variegation. The ‘Splash’ variety is particularly sought after due to its unique silver flecks, which appear like delicate splashes across its deep green foliage. Native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, this plant is an epiphytic vine, meaning it naturally grows on trees and absorbs nutrients from its surroundings.

As a member of the Apocynaceae family, Hoya obovata ‘Splash’ is a slow-growing but low-maintenance houseplant. It produces clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers when mature, with pink or white petals and a deeper pink centre. The flowers are waxy and long-lasting, adding to the plant’s exotic appeal.

Due to its succulent-like leaves, this plant is drought-tolerant and ideal for beginners looking for an easy-care trailing or hanging plant.

Care Guide for Hoya obovata ‘Splash’

Light Requirements

Hoya obovata ‘Splash’ thrives in bright, indirect light and can tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sun.

  • Ideal placement: Near an east- or west-facing window where it receives gentle sunlight.
  • Artificial light: Can grow under LED grow lights if natural light is insufficient.
  • Avoid: Too much direct sun, which can scorch the leaves, or too little light, which can cause leggy growth and reduce variegation.

Temperature & Humidity

This tropical plant enjoys warm and humid conditions, similar to its natural environment.

  • Temperature range: 18–27°C (65–80°F). Avoid exposure to temperatures below 12°C (54°F).
  • Humidity: 50% or higher is preferred.
    • If humidity is low, consider placing it near a humidifier or using a pebble tray.
    • It can tolerate normal indoor humidity but will thrive in higher humidity levels, especially when flowering.

Watering

Hoya obovata ‘Splash’ has semi-succulent leaves, meaning it is drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings.

  • Watering schedule: Water when the top 5 cm (2 inches) of soil feels dry.
  • In warmer months: Typically, once every 7–10 days.
  • In winter: Reduce watering to every 2–3 weeks as growth slows.
  • Water quality: Prefers filtered, distilled, or rainwater, as tap water with high chlorine can cause leaf spotting.
  • Method: Water thoroughly until excess drains from the pot, but never leave the plant sitting in water.

Soil Requirements

Well-draining, airy soil is essential to prevent root rot. A chunky, well-aerated mix is ideal, such as:

  • 40% orchid bark
  • 30% perlite
  • 20% coco coir or peat moss
  • 10% worm castings (for added nutrients)

A cactus or succulent mix with added perlite and orchid bark can also work well.

Fertilising

Hoya obovata ‘Splash’ benefits from regular feeding during the growing season (spring & summer).

  • Use a balanced liquid fertiliser (diluted to half strength) every 4 weeks.
  • When approaching flowering season, switch to a phosphorus-rich fertiliser to encourage blooms.
  • Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Prune occasionally to control leggy growth and promote a fuller shape.
  • Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance photosynthesis.
  • If flowering, do not remove old peduncles (flower stalks)—Hoyas rebloom from the same spot.

Pests & Diseases

Hoya obovata ‘Splash’ is generally pest-resistant, but watch out for:

  • Mealybugs & aphids – Wipe off with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
  • Spider mites – Increase humidity and rinse leaves with water.
  • Root rot – Caused by overwatering; ensure well-draining soil and avoid soggy conditions.

Propagation

Hoya obovata ‘Splash’ is easy to propagate via stem cuttings.

  1. Take a cutting with at least 2–3 nodes and remove the lower leaves.
  2. Let the cutting dry for a few hours to seal the cut.
  3. Place in water, sphagnum moss, or a perlite mix.
  4. Keep in bright, indirect light and maintain humidity.
  5. Roots should develop in 3–6 weeks, after which it can be transferred to soil.
