This fascinating foliage makes ‘Stingray’ a highly sought-after variety among plant collectors and houseplant enthusiasts.

Native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia, Alocasia macrorrhiza ‘Stingray’ thrives in warm, humid environments and can grow into an impressive specimen with proper care. As it matures, its upright growth habit and bold architectural presence make it a statement piece in any indoor or outdoor setting.

Care Guide

Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect light to thrive.
  • Can tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sunlight but should be protected from harsh midday sun, which can scorch its leaves.
  • If kept in low light, growth may slow, and the plant may become leggy.

Watering

  • Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Water when the top 2-3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry.
  • Reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant enters a slower growth phase.
  • Always use a well-draining potting mix and ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Humidity & Temperature

  • Thrives in high humidity levels (60-80%). If humidity is too low, the leaves may develop brown edges.
  • Increase humidity by:
    • Using a humidifier.
    • Placing a pebble tray with water beneath the plant.
    • Grouping it with other tropical plants.
  • Prefers warm temperatures between 18-27°C (65-80°F).
  • Keep away from cold drafts, air conditioners, and heating vents, as it is sensitive to temperature fluctuations.

Soil & Potting

  • Requires a well-draining, aerated soil mix. A good mixture includes:
    • 40% peat-based potting mix or coco coir
    • 30% perlite for aeration
    • 20% orchid bark for structure
    • 10% worm castings for nutrients
  • Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent excess moisture retention.

Fertilisation

  • Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser (such as 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) every 4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Reduce fertilisation to once every 6-8 weeks in autumn and winter.
  • Avoid over-fertilising, as Alocasias are sensitive to mineral buildup, which can cause leaf tip browning.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Trim off yellowing, damaged, or old leaves to encourage new growth.
  • Wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
  • Alocasias naturally shed leaves over time; if a leaf dies, it is normal and signals new growth.

Dormancy

  • During winter or cooler months, Alocasia ‘Stingray’ may enter a dormant phase, where it slows or stops growing and may drop leaves.
  • Reduce watering but do not let the soil dry out completely.
  • If the plant loses all its leaves, do not throw it away—the rhizome remains alive and will regrow when conditions improve in spring.

Propagation

  • Best propagated through division rather than cuttings.
  • To propagate:
    1. Carefully remove the plant from its pot.
    2. Separate the rhizomes (bulb-like structures) from the parent plant.
    3. Plant each division in fresh, well-draining soil.
    4. Water lightly and keep in a warm, humid environment to encourage growth.

Pests & Common Issues

  • Pests: Watch out for spider mites, aphids, mealybugs, and thrips. Regularly check the undersides of leaves and treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
  • Yellowing Leaves: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure the soil dries slightly between waterings.
  • Brown Leaf Tips: Usually due to low humidity or over-fertilisation. Increase humidity and reduce fertiliser if necessary.
  • Leggy Growth: Insufficient light—move the plant to a brighter location.
