The Variegated Spathiphyllum Aurea, commonly known as Variegated Peace Lily, is an attractive and low-maintenance houseplant prized for its beautiful, variegated foliage and elegant white flowers. This plant is a variegated form of the standard Spathiphyllum, featuring leaves with striking yellow or creamy white variegation alongside the classic deep green.

  • Leaves: The leaves are broad, lance-shaped, and glossy, with variegation patterns that can range from streaks and patches of yellow or creamy white to more subtle marbling. The variegation adds a bright and cheerful touch to the plant's appearance.
  • Flowers: The plant produces white, hooded flowers (spathes) that resemble a cobra's hood, each enclosing a spadix. These blooms add an elegant touch to the plant.
  • Size: When grown indoors, Variegated Spathiphyllum Aurea can reach up to 0.6-1 meter (2-3 feet) in height, depending on the growing conditions.
  • Growth Habit: This plant has a clumping growth habit, producing new shoots from the base, which can create a lush and full appearance.

Care Guide

Light
  • Optimal Conditions: Variegated Spathiphyllum Aurea thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light conditions, the variegation will be more pronounced in brighter light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Light Tolerance: This plant is adaptable and can grow in low to medium light conditions, but reduced light may lead to less vibrant variegation.
Watering
  • Watering Schedule: Water the plant when the top 2-3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering can cause the leaves to droop and turn brown at the tips.
  • Humidity: Spathiphyllum Aurea enjoys higher humidity levels. Regular misting, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or using a humidifier can help maintain adequate humidity, especially in dry indoor environments.
Soil
  • Type: Use a well-draining, fertile potting mix. A mix containing peat moss, perlite, and some organic matter like compost is ideal.
  • pH Level: The soil should be slightly acidic to neutral, with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.0.
Temperature
  • Optimal Range: Keep the plant in a warm environment with temperatures between 18-26°C (65-79°F). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
Fertilising
  • Frequency: Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
  • Type: Use a balanced fertiliser with an NPK ratio like 10-10-10 or one specifically designed for houseplants.
Pruning and Maintenance
  • Pruning: Remove any dead, yellowing, or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's appearance and encourage healthy growth. Cut back spent flowers to promote new blooms.
  • Cleaning: Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth regularly to remove dust and improve photosynthesis.
Propagation
  • Method: Variegated Spathiphyllum Aurea can be propagated through division. When repotting, carefully separate the clumps of the plant, ensuring each division has roots and shoots. Plant the divisions in individual pots with a well-draining soil mix.
  • Timing: The best time to propagate is during the growing season (spring or summer) when the plant is actively growing.
Pests and Diseases
  • Common Pests: Watch out for spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Regularly inspect the leaves and treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Diseases: Root rot is a common issue caused by overwatering. Ensure proper drainage and avoid letting the plant sit in water. Also, be mindful of leaf spot diseases and treat with appropriate fungicides if necessary.
Repotting
  • Frequency: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 2-5 cm (1-2 inches) larger in diameter than the current pot.
  • Procedure: Carefully remove the plant from its pot, gently loosen the roots, and place it in a new pot with fresh soil. Water thoroughly after repotting.
