Rhaphidophora korthalsii 'Marble Aura' is a rare and visually stunning houseplant known for its variegated foliage and climbing habit. It's a sought-after cultivar among plant collectors, particularly those with an affinity for variegated and aroid species. This plant provides a lush, tropical feel and adds a decorative element to any indoor setting with its unique leaf patterns. Here’s a detailed description and care guide for Rhaphidophora korthalsii 'Marble Aura':

Description

Rhaphidophora korthalsii 'Marble Aura' features large, heart-shaped leaves that are dark green with dramatic splashes and streaks of white variegation. The variegation can vary from leaf to leaf, with some leaves almost entirely white and others mostly green. As a climbing plant, it can grow quite tall and benefits from support, such as a moss pole, to help it maintain its upward trajectory and encourage larger leaf development.

Care Guide

Light

Rhaphidophora korthalsii 'Marble Aura' thrives in medium to bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light levels, but its growth may slow, and the variegation may become less pronounced. Avoid direct sunlight, as intense rays can scorch the variegated parts of the leaves, which are more susceptible to damage.

Water

Water this plant when the top inch or so of soil has dried out. Rhaphidophora prefers consistent moisture but does not like to be waterlogged. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, a common issue with overwatered aroids. Reduce watering in the winter when growth naturally slows.

Soil

Use a well-draining, airy potting mix that is rich in organic matter. A mix designed for aroids, containing ingredients like perlite, peat, and orchid bark, is ideal. This type of mix will support the plant's need for moisture retention and adequate drainage.

Temperature and Humidity

Rhaphidophora korthalsii 'Marble Aura' prefers warm conditions and high humidity, typical of its native tropical environment. Maintain temperatures between 18 to 27 degrees Celsius and avoid exposure to drafts or temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius. High humidity, around 60% or higher, is beneficial and can be maintained with a humidifier or by placing the plant on a humidity tray.

Fertiliser

Feed the plant every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding during the autumn and winter months when the plant’s growth slows.

Support

As a climbing plant, providing support such as a moss pole or trellis will encourage vertical growth and larger leaf development. Attach the plant gently to the support to encourage it to climb.

Pruning

Pruning is generally minimal but can be performed to control size and remove any unhealthy leaves. This helps to maintain the plant’s appearance and health.

Pests and Diseases

Watch for pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Regular leaf inspections and cleaning will help keep these pests at bay. Treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Also, be cautious with watering to prevent fungal diseases.

Rhaphidophora korthalsii 'Marble Aura' is a spectacular and relatively demanding plant that requires careful attention to thrive. It is ideal for plant enthusiasts looking for a challenge and a striking addition to their indoor plant collection. With proper care, this rare aroid can be a beautiful and rewarding part of your home or office.
