Care Guide for Alocasia ‘Mandalay’

1. Light

  • Ideal Conditions: Bright, indirect light is best for maintaining the vibrant colour and health of the foliage.
  • Tolerances: Can tolerate moderate light but will grow slower in lower light.
  • Avoid: Direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

2. Watering

  • Frequency: Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry. Keep the soil slightly moist but never waterlogged.
  • Method: Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain out completely.
  • Avoid: Overwatering, as the plant is prone to root rot.

3. Humidity

  • Ideal Levels: Prefers high humidity (60% or more).
  • Enhancements: Use a humidifier, mist regularly, or place near other tropical plants to increase humidity levels.

4. Temperature

  • Optimal Range: 18–27°C (65–80°F).
  • Avoid: Temperatures below 15°C (59°F) or cold drafts.

5. Soil

  • Type: A well-draining, rich soil mix is essential.
  • Best Mix: Combine potting soil with perlite, orchid bark, and a small amount of peat moss or coconut coir.

6. Fertiliser

  • Schedule: Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength.
  • Avoid: Fertilising in winter, when the plant’s growth slows.

7. Pruning

  • Purpose: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves to encourage healthy growth and maintain appearance.
  • Method: Use clean scissors or pruning shears to cut leaves close to the base.

8. Repotting

  • Frequency: Repot every 1–2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound.
  • Best Time: Spring, before the active growing season begins.

9. Propagation

  • Method: Propagate by division or offsets.
    • Gently separate the plant at its base, ensuring each division has roots and healthy leaves.
    • Plant the divisions in fresh soil and water sparingly until established.

10. Common Issues

  • Yellowing Leaves: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Crispy Leaf Edges: Usually due to low humidity or underwatering.
  • Pests: Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Special Tips

  • Rotate the plant occasionally to encourage even growth and prevent leaning.
  • Avoid placing the plant in cold or draughty areas, as it is sensitive to temperature fluctuations.
  • Clean the leaves gently with a damp cloth to keep them glossy and free of dust, improving photosynthesis.
