Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. Hoya ranauensis is a rare and stunning epiphytic plant from the forests of Borneo, specifically found around Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia. This species belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is prized for its thick, waxy leaves and fragrant, star-shaped flowers.
The leaves of Hoya ranauensis are thick, leathery, and slightly glossy. They are typically oval to lanceolate in shape, with a prominent central vein. The colour ranges from deep green to lighter shades, sometimes with visible veining. Their slightly textured surface helps retain moisture, making this Hoya relatively drought-tolerant.
The flowers bloom in umbel-like clusters and have a delicate, star-shaped appearance. Their petals are fleshy, often displaying a pale pink, cream, or yellowish hue with a darker pink or red centre. These blooms are fragrant, especially in the evening, and produce nectar to attract pollinators in their natural habitat.
As a vining epiphyte, Hoya ranauensis grows by twining around supports or trailing elegantly when placed in a hanging basket. It anchors itself with aerial roots, mimicking its natural growing conditions. The plant has a moderate to slow growth rate, depending on environmental factors.
Hoya ranauensis thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while insufficient light may slow growth and prevent flowering. If grown indoors, placing it near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Some morning sun is beneficial, but it should be protected from intense afternoon rays.
This plant prefers warm conditions, ideally between 18–30°C (65–86°F). It is not frost-tolerant and should always be kept above 10°C (50°F). High humidity levels between 60-80% are preferred, though the plant can adapt to lower humidity with occasional misting or a nearby humidifier.
Water the plant when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. In cooler months, reduce watering to prevent over-saturation. Always use room-temperature, non-chlorinated water when possible. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the potting medium is well-draining.
A well-draining, airy soil mix is essential for Hoya ranauensis. A suitable mix consists of orchid bark, perlite or pumice, peat moss or coco coir, and a small amount of charcoal for added drainage. This combination prevents excess moisture retention and mimics its natural growing conditions.
During the growing season (spring and summer), feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks. A fertiliser with higher phosphorus content can encourage flowering. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows.
Repotting is necessary every 2-3 years or when the roots outgrow the pot. A slightly larger pot should be chosen to prevent excessive moisture retention. Terracotta or breathable plastic pots with drainage holes are ideal for maintaining healthy root conditions.
Regular pruning helps maintain a bushier shape and encourages branching. Avoid cutting off peduncles (flower stalks), as Hoyas bloom repeatedly from the same nodes. Cleaning the leaves occasionally helps remove dust and improves photosynthesis.
Propagation is straightforward using stem cuttings. Cuttings should include at least one node and can be rooted in water, sphagnum moss, or a well-draining potting mix. Rooting usually takes between 2-6 weeks, depending on humidity and temperature.
Yellowing leaves are often a sign of overwatering, while wrinkled leaves may indicate underwatering or low humidity. If the plant fails to bloom, it may not be receiving enough light or nutrients. Root rot is a common issue if the soil remains too wet, so ensuring proper drainage is crucial. Pests such as mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids can occasionally appear, especially in dry conditions. Wiping the leaves regularly and using neem oil can help keep pests under control.
