Hoya carnosa ‘Grey Ghost’ is an extraordinary cultivar prized for its unique, silvery-grey foliage. The thick, waxy leaves are heavily covered in silver splashes, sometimes appearing almost entirely grey with faint green veining. This distinctive appearance gives the plant a "ghostly" aesthetic, making it a favourite among collectors.

Like other Hoya varieties, ‘Grey Ghost’ is a climbing or trailing vine that produces clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers. The blooms are pale pink with a darker centre and have a waxy, porcelain-like texture. This cultivar grows slowly but rewards patience with its striking foliage and occasional flowers.

Care Guide for Hoya Carnosa ‘Grey Ghost’

1. Light

  • Ideal Conditions: Bright, indirect light enhances its silvery foliage.
  • Tolerances: Can handle moderate light, but the silvery patterning may fade in lower light.
  • Avoid: Direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.

2. Watering

  • Frequency: Allow the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of soil to dry before watering. Reduce watering in winter.
  • Method: Water deeply, ensuring excess drains out completely.
  • Avoid: Overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

3. Humidity

  • Ideal Levels: Thrives in moderate to high humidity (50%+).
  • Enhancements: Use a pebble tray or humidifier in dry indoor environments.

4. Temperature

  • Optimal Range: 18–24°C (65–75°F).
  • Avoid: Prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

5. Soil

  • Type: Well-draining, aerated mix.
  • Best Mix: A combination of orchid bark, perlite, and standard potting soil ensures proper drainage and aeration.

6. Fertiliser

  • Schedule: Feed once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength.
  • Avoid: Fertilising during the dormant winter months.

7. Pruning

  • Purpose: Remove any dead or damaged leaves to maintain appearance.
  • Caution: Do not prune flower peduncles (spurs), as they produce blooms repeatedly.

8. Repotting

  • Frequency: Every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its pot.
  • Best Time: Spring, to coincide with the start of the growing season.

9. Propagation

  • Method: Propagation by stem cuttings is most effective.
    • Use a cutting with at least 2–3 nodes.
    • Root in water or a well-draining soil mix.

10. Common Issues

  • Fading Silver Leaves: May occur in low light; move to a brighter location.
  • Yellowing Leaves: Often a sign of overwatering.
  • Pests: Common pests include mealybugs, spider mites, and scale. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.

Special Tips

  • Hoya carnosa ‘Grey Ghost’ prefers to be slightly root-bound, which can also encourage blooming.
  • To maintain its silvery foliage, ensure consistent light levels and avoid over-fertilising.
  • Misting is optional but can help during warm months or in low-humidity environments.

With proper care, Hoya carnosa ‘Grey Ghost’ will be a stunning addition to your indoor plant collection, offering unique foliage and occasional fragrant blooms!
