Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. It's also worth noting that the plant you receive may slightly differ from the images displayed on our website. Hoya aff. vitellina is a rare and beautiful species known for its stunning foliage and vibrant flowers. The term aff. (affinis) indicates that this plant closely resembles Hoya vitellina but has slight variations that differentiate it. Native to Southeast Asia, this species thrives in warm, humid conditions and is a favourite among collectors for its ease of care and striking appearance.
The leaves of Hoya aff. vitellina are thick, waxy, and slightly succulent, allowing the plant to store moisture efficiently. They are typically oval to lanceolate in shape, with a prominent central vein and a glossy texture. Depending on the light conditions, the leaves may exhibit a reddish tint along the edges, especially when exposed to bright indirect light.
The flowers are a standout feature of this Hoya, forming dense umbels of star-shaped blooms. They are typically bright yellow, orange, or golden with a contrasting red or maroon centre, creating a striking visual effect. The flowers have a waxy texture and emit a sweet, pleasant fragrance, particularly in the evening. Flowering is more frequent when the plant receives optimal light and care.
As a vining epiphyte, Hoya aff. vitellina grows by twining around supports, making it ideal for trellises, moss poles, or hanging baskets. It has a moderate to fast growth rate in warm, humid conditions. With proper support, it can become an impressive trailing or climbing specimen.
Hoya aff. vitellina thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while insufficient light may slow growth and reduce flowering. If grown indoors, an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Some gentle morning sunlight can enhance leaf coloration and encourage blooming, but intense afternoon sun should be avoided.
This species prefers warm temperatures between 18–30°C (65–86°F). It is not cold-tolerant and should always be kept above 10°C (50°F). High humidity (above 60%) is beneficial, though the plant can adapt to moderate humidity levels. If indoor air is dry, occasional misting or using a humidifier will help maintain optimal conditions.
Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. The plant prefers to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. Reduce watering during the winter months when growth slows. Always use room-temperature, non-chlorinated water to avoid stressing the roots.
A well-draining, airy potting mix is essential. A suitable mix includes orchid bark, perlite or pumice, coco coir or peat moss, and a small amount of charcoal for drainage. This mix mimics the plant’s natural growing environment and prevents waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). A fertiliser with higher phosphorus content can be used to encourage flowering. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
Repot every 2-3 years or when the roots outgrow the pot. Choose a container with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture retention. Terracotta pots are ideal as they allow the soil to dry out more quickly, reducing the risk of root rot.
Pruning helps maintain a compact shape and encourages bushier growth. Avoid cutting off flower peduncles, as Hoyas rebloom from the same nodes. Wiping the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth removes dust and improves photosynthesis.
Propagation is best done through stem cuttings. Cuttings should include at least one node and can be rooted in water, sphagnum moss, or a well-draining mix. Rooting typically takes 2-6 weeks, depending on temperature and humidity.
