Fatsia japonica ‘Variegata’, also known as Variegated Japanese Aralia, is an eye-catching, evergreen shrub with large, deeply lobed, palmate leaves. Its variegated foliage, featuring splashes of creamy white or yellow against deep green, makes it a striking addition to both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Native to Japan and Korea, Fatsia japonica is valued for its tropical appearance, fast growth, and tolerance to shade. The variegated variety offers added visual interest, making it a popular choice for shaded gardens, patios, and bright indoor spaces.

In autumn, mature plants may produce clusters of small, creamy-white flowers, followed by black berries that attract birds and pollinators. Despite its exotic appearance, Fatsia japonica ‘Variegata’ is remarkably hardy and can withstand cooler temperatures better than many other tropical-looking plants.

Care Guide

Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect light for the best variegation.
  • Can tolerate partial to deep shade, making it an excellent plant for shaded patios, north-facing gardens, or low-light indoor areas.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the variegated leaves.

Watering

  • Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Water when the top 2-3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry.
  • Reduce watering in autumn and winter, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
  • If grown indoors, mist occasionally to increase humidity and prevent dry leaf edges.

Humidity & Temperature

  • Thrives in moderate humidity levels but adapts well to drier air.
  • Prefers temperatures between 10-24°C (50-75°F).
  • Hardy down to -10°C (14°F) if grown outdoors, making it suitable for sheltered gardens in the UK and other temperate regions.
  • Protect from cold, drying winds and frost, especially when young.

Soil & Potting

  • Requires a well-draining, nutrient-rich soil mix. A good blend includes:
    • 50% loam-based compost or peat-free potting mix
    • 20% perlite for aeration
    • 20% organic matter (such as compost or leaf mould)
    • 10% sand or grit for improved drainage
  • If planting outdoors, choose a sheltered spot with fertile, well-draining soil.

Fertilisation

  • Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser (such as 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) every 4-6 weeks during spring and summer.
  • Reduce feeding in autumn and winter, when growth slows.
  • If leaves appear pale or yellowish, apply a mild seaweed or organic fertiliser to boost nutrients.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Minimal pruning is needed, but you can trim back long or leggy growth in early spring to maintain shape.
  • Remove dead or damaged leaves regularly to encourage fresh growth.
  • Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance photosynthesis.
  • If growing outdoors, consider mulching around the base in winter to protect the roots from frost.

Propagation

Fatsia japonica ‘Variegata’ can be propagated through semi-hardwood cuttings or seeds.

Propagation by Cuttings

  1. In late summer, take a 10-15 cm (4-6 inch) cutting from a healthy stem with at least one node.
  2. Remove lower leaves and dip the cut end in rooting hormone.
  3. Plant in a moist perlite and compost mix.
  4. Keep in a warm, humid environment with indirect light.
  5. Roots should develop within 4-6 weeks, after which the cutting can be transplanted into a larger pot or garden bed.

Pests & Common Issues

  • Pests: Occasionally affected by spider mites, scale insects, and aphids. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
  • Yellowing Leaves: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure soil is well-draining and allow it to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Brown Leaf Edges: Usually due to low humidity or underwatering—increase watering and humidity if needed.
  • Leaf Drop: Can be a sign of temperature stress or sudden environmental changes. Keep conditions stable and avoid exposure to drafts.

Plastic Nursery Pots: All our plants are supplied in practical plastic nursery pots. If you prefer a more decorative option, we offer a range of stylish pots available for purchase separately.

Non-Consumable: Please note that our plants are intended for ornamental purposes only unless specifically stated as edible. Ensure you check product descriptions carefully if you are looking for edible varieties.

Variable Heights: The height of our plants can vary by approximately +/- 10%. This natural fluctuation ensures you receive a unique and healthy specimen.

Plant Pot Sizes: Pot sizes may vary by approximately +/- 1cm. To ensure a proper fit, we recommend selecting a decorative pot that is 1-2cm larger than the stated plant pot size. For instance, if you purchase a plant in a 17cm pot, a 18 - 19cm decorative pot would be ideal.

Quarantining: All our houseplants are regularly sprayed with a preventative systemic bug treatment. We do our best to ensure a bug free growing environment however sometimes these can unfortunately be missed, as such we always recommend quarantining plants when they first enter your home and checking them upon arrival for bugs.
