Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. It's also worth noting that the plant you receive may slightly differ from the images displayed on our website. This variation is natural, given that each plant is unique and subject to seasonal growth changes.

Calathea ‘Surprise Star’ is a stunning member of the Marantaceae family, native to the tropical rainforests of South America. Calatheas are admired for their ornate foliage, and this cultivar is particularly eye-catching, with its vibrant colours and striking patterns.
The leaves are broad and oval, with a rich dark green base decorated with pale green to silvery stripes radiating from the midrib, almost brushstroke-like in effect. Each leaf underside is a deep burgundy-purple, creating a bold contrast when the plant folds its leaves upwards at night – a behaviour known as nyctinasty, common to prayer plants. The name ‘Surprise Star’ comes from its unexpected burst of colour and the star-like effect of its leaf markings.
Compact and bushy, Calathea ‘Surprise Star’ typically reaches 40–60 cm in height indoors, making it an ideal tabletop or floor specimen that adds an instant tropical feel to interiors.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Tolerates lower light, but vibrant patterns may fade. Avoid direct sunlight, which will scorch delicate foliage.
Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Calatheas are sensitive to hard tap water – use filtered, rain, or distilled water if possible to avoid leaf spotting.
Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid drops below 15°C.
Humidity: Requires high humidity (60–80%). Mist regularly, use pebble trays, or place near a humidifier. Dry air can cause crisp leaf edges.
Use a light, airy, and free-draining peat-free compost with added perlite or coco coir. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the mix.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer. Avoid overfeeding, as Calathea roots can be sensitive.
Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to encourage fresh growth. Wipe the broad leaves with a damp cloth to maintain their colour and sheen.
A moderate grower, forming a dense clump up to 40–60 cm tall and wide indoors. Provides year-round interest with its bold foliage.
Brown edges: Often due to low humidity or fluoride in water.
Curling leaves: Underwatering or low humidity.
Faded patterns: Too little light.
Pests: May occasionally attract spider mites, aphids, or thrips.
Calatheas are often called “living art” thanks to their colourful patterns. ‘Surprise Star’ is one of the more dramatic cultivars, combining star-like variegation with rich purple undersides. As a non-toxic plant, it is also safe for homes with pets or children.
