How to remove flies from houseplants

by Plants for all Seasons 10 Mar 2023 0 Comments

Flies are a common problem with houseplants, particularly if the soil is kept too moist or if there is excess organic matter in the pot. Here are some tips for removing flies from houseplants:

  1. Check the soil - If flies are present in your houseplants, the first step is to check the soil. Overwatering or excess organic matter in the soil can contribute to the growth of flies. If the soil is too moist, allow it to dry out before watering again. You can also try repotting the plant with fresh soil to remove any excess organic matter.

  2. Use sticky traps - Sticky traps can be an effective way to capture flies and other insects. Place a sticky trap near the affected plant and the flies will be attracted to it and become trapped.

  3. Use neem oil - Neem oil is a natural insecticide that can be effective at killing flies and other insects. Mix a few drops of neem oil with water and spray the affected plant, making sure to cover both the leaves and the soil.

  4. Use vinegar - A mixture of apple cider vinegar and dish soap can be an effective trap for fruit flies. Fill a small dish with the mixture and place it near the affected plant. The flies will be attracted to the vinegar and become trapped in the mixture.

  5. Maintain cleanliness - Regularly cleaning and maintaining the area around your plants can help to prevent the growth of flies. Make sure to remove any dead leaves or organic matter from the soil, as this can contribute to the growth of flies.

  6. Reduce humidity - Flies thrive in humid environments, so reducing the humidity around your plants can help to prevent their growth. Use a dehumidifier or place a small fan near the affected plant to increase air circulation.

By following these tips, you can effectively remove flies from your houseplants and prevent their growth in the future.
