Platycerium superbum, commonly known as the Staghorn Fern or Elkhorn Fern, is an extraordinary epiphytic fern prized for its dramatic, antler-like fronds and sculptural form. A member of the Polypodiaceae family and native to the rainforests of Australia and Southeast Asia, this species naturally grows high on tree trunks, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain.

Its impressive structure features two types of fronds: flat, shield-like sterile fronds that protect the root base and collect organic matter, and upright, forked fertile fronds that resemble stag antlers. When mature, these antler fronds can reach over a metre in length, creating a breathtaking display of cascading green foliage.

Elegant, architectural, and full of tropical character, Platycerium superbum is a living piece of natural art — perfect for mounting on wooden boards or hanging baskets, where it can develop its signature shape and grandeur.

Platycerium superbum – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some gentle morning or late afternoon sun but should be protected from harsh midday rays, which can scorch the fronds. Ideal placement is near an east-facing window or in filtered light under a canopy of taller plants.

Watering

Keep the growing medium lightly moist at all times but never soggy. Water by soaking or misting rather than direct overhead watering. When mounted, submerge the entire mount in lukewarm water for 10–15 minutes, then allow it to drain thoroughly. Water more frequently in summer and reduce slightly in winter, allowing the base to dry slightly between waterings.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–28 °C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 10 °C.
Humidity: High humidity (60–80%) is essential. Mist the fronds regularly or use a humidifier, especially in centrally heated homes. Bathrooms or kitchens with good light and natural moisture are ideal environments.

Soil and Mounting

As an epiphyte, Platycerium superbum grows best mounted on a wooden board, tree fern slab, or hung in a wire basket lined with sphagnum moss. Avoid traditional potting soil — it should be secured with moss or bark that retains moisture while allowing airflow. When young, it can be grown in a loose orchid or fern mix before transitioning to a mount.

Feeding

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser (¼ to ½ strength). Apply via misting directly onto the fronds or soak the mount in fertiliser solution. Stop feeding during the cooler months.

Pruning and Maintenance

Do not remove the brown shield fronds at the base — these are essential for protecting the root system and absorbing nutrients. Remove only dead or damaged antler fronds to maintain appearance. Wipe or gently dust the fronds with a soft brush — avoid polishing or spraying with leaf shine.

Growth and Maturity

A slow to moderate grower, Platycerium superbum develops an impressive rosette of shield fronds and large, arching antler fronds that can span over 1 metre across when mature. With proper humidity and support, it can live for decades, growing more majestic each year.

Common Issues

  • Brown fronds: Natural ageing or underwatering (check moisture levels).

  • Black spots: Overwatering or poor air circulation.

  • Shrivelled fronds: Low humidity or prolonged dryness.

  • Pests: Occasionally affected by scale or mealybugs — wipe with neem oil and increase airflow.

Background and Benefits

In its natural habitat, Platycerium superbum grows on tree trunks in tropical forests, forming large colonies that act as mini-ecosystems, collecting debris and water to sustain themselves. The name “superbum” reflects its grandeur and size — it’s one of the largest and most impressive of all Staghorn Ferns.

As a houseplant, it brings a dramatic, tropical presence and helps improve air quality through passive filtration. Its unique silhouette and natural mounting make it a favourite among plant designers and collectors seeking living wall art.

Its striking antler-like fronds pair beautifully with plants like Philodendron ‘Micans’ or Alocasia ‘Silver Dragon’ for contrast.
