20 - 30cm Pineapple Plant Ananas Corona 12cm Pot House Plant

Ananas corona is a stunning ornamental variety of the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus), known for its compact size, striking foliage, and ability to produce small, edible pineapples. As a member of the Bromeliaceae family, this tropical plant thrives in warm, sunny environments and makes a fantastic indoor or outdoor plant. It is widely grown for both its fruit and its beautiful rosette of spiky, arching leaves.

Leaves

The foliage of Ananas corona forms a symmetrical rosette of long, sword-shaped leaves that can grow between 40-80 cm (16-32 inches) long. The leaves are often deep green with a slightly silvery hue, and some varieties display red or purple tinges along the edges when exposed to bright light. The stiff, spiny texture provides the plant with its signature pineapple-like appearance.

Flowers & Fruit

Mature plants produce a central flower spike, typically red, pink, or purple, which develops into a small, edible pineapple fruit. The fruit takes 5-7 months to fully mature and remains decorative even if not harvested. Once the fruit is removed, the mother plant will eventually die, but it produces offsets (pups) that can be propagated to continue growth.

Growth Habit

This clumping, non-vining plant grows in a rosette formation and stays relatively compact, making it ideal for pots or garden beds. In ideal conditions, Ananas corona reaches a height of 50-100 cm (20-40 inches) with a similar spread.

Care Guide

Light Requirements

Ananas corona thrives in bright, direct sunlight for at least 6-8 hours per day. If grown indoors, place it near a south-facing window or use a grow light for optimal growth. Without enough light, the plant may become leggy, and fruiting may be delayed or inhibited.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 20–32°C (68–90°F). It is not frost-tolerant, and temperatures below 10°C (50°F) can cause damage.
  • Humidity: Adaptable to different humidity levels but thrives in moderate to high humidity (50-70%). If indoor air is dry, occasional misting can help.

Watering

  • Water when the top 3-5 cm of soil feels dry.
  • Avoid overwatering, as pineapple plants are drought-tolerant and can suffer from root rot.
  • Pour water directly into the central rosette (cup) of leaves, as this mimics how the plant collects water in nature.
  • Reduce watering in winter when the plant’s growth slows.

Soil & Potting Mix

A well-draining, sandy, or loamy mix is ideal to prevent water retention. A good mix includes:

  • Cactus or succulent soil
  • Perlite or pumice (for aeration)
  • Sand or orchid bark (to enhance drainage)

Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent standing water.

Fertilisation

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser (such as 10-10-10) every 2-4 weeks during the growing season.

  • A fertiliser high in phosphorus and potassium encourages fruiting.
  • Liquid seaweed or organic compost tea can be used as a natural fertiliser.
  • Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.

Potting & Repotting

  • Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its container.
  • Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
  • If growing outdoors, space plants at least 60 cm (24 inches) apart to allow airflow.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Trim dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy.
  • Remove pups (offsets) that grow at the plant’s base to propagate new plants.
  • After fruiting, the mother plant will die, so pups should be replanted to continue growth.

Propagation

Propagation is easy through pups (offsets) or crown cuttings:

Using Pups

  1. Wait until the pup is at least 15 cm (6 inches) tall.
  2. Gently twist and separate it from the base.
  3. Let it dry for 1-2 days before planting in a well-draining mix.
  4. Water lightly and place in bright, indirect light until established.

Using the Pineapple Crown

  1. Cut the top (crown) of a mature pineapple and remove lower leaves.
  2. Let it dry for 1-2 days to prevent rot.
  3. Place in water or soil until roots develop.
  4. Once roots reach 5 cm (2 inches), transplant to a pot.

Common Problems & Solutions

  • Yellowing Leaves – Usually due to overwatering. Let the soil dry out before watering again.
  • Browning Leaf Tips – Indicates low humidity or excessive sunlight. Increase humidity or adjust lighting.
  • Slow Growth – Often caused by low light or lack of nutrients. Move to a brighter spot and fertilise regularly.
  • Rotting Base – Caused by waterlogged soil. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering.
  • Pests (Mealybugs, Spider Mites, Aphids) – Use neem oil or insecticidal soap to prevent infestations.
