Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. Hoya macrophylla ‘Splash’ is a stunning tropical vine admired for its large, boldly veined leaves adorned with silvery splashes that glisten under the light. Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, this species belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is one of the most distinctive Hoyas thanks to its broad foliage and intricate variegation.
The thick, waxy leaves are oval to elongated, with raised cream or lime-green veins running through a rich green background. The ‘Splash’ variety displays scattered silvery flecks or splashes across the leaf surface, giving it a shimmering, almost metallic finish. Mature plants produce clusters of small, star-shaped flowers — typically pale pink to white — that emit a sweet, honey-like fragrance.
Elegant yet easy-going, Hoya macrophylla ‘Splash’ makes an eye-catching statement as a trailing or climbing plant, bringing a modern, tropical charm to bright interiors, green walls, or plant shelves.
Prefers bright, indirect light to enhance its silver variegation and leaf veining. A few hours of gentle morning sun is beneficial, but avoid harsh midday or afternoon rays that can scorch the leaves. Lower light will reduce the silvery “splash” markings.
Water when the top 3–4 cm of the soil is dry. The thick leaves store moisture, so Hoya macrophylla is drought-tolerant and more likely to suffer from overwatering than underwatering. Use room-temperature water and allow excess to drain completely. In winter, water sparingly to avoid soggy roots.
Temperature: Ideal range 18–28°C. Protect from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity (60–80%), but tolerates average indoor conditions. For optimum growth, mist occasionally or use a humidifier during dry months.
Use a well-draining, airy mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat-free compost. The roots prefer a loose, breathable substrate to prevent rot. Pot in a container with drainage holes, and allow it to become slightly root-bound before repotting every 2–3 years.
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser or one formulated for epiphytic plants. Stop feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows. A fertiliser slightly higher in phosphorus will support blooming.
Prune lightly to shape and control growth, especially if vines become leggy. Avoid cutting off the peduncles (flower spurs) after blooming, as new flower clusters emerge from the same points each year. Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to maintain their glossy sheen and remove dust.
A moderate to vigorous grower depending on light and temperature. It can reach 1–2 metres in length with support or when trained along a trellis. In ideal conditions, mature plants reward with clusters of fragrant blooms that last several weeks.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering or low humidity.
Lack of blooms: Insufficient light or cutting off flower spurs.
Pests: Occasionally attracts mealybugs or aphids — wipe affected areas and treat with neem oil if necessary.
Hoya macrophylla derives its name from its “macro” (large) and “phylla” (leaf) structure, a fitting description for its impressive, veined foliage. The ‘Splash’ cultivar is particularly sought after for its silver-flecked leaves that shimmer in bright light — a visual texture that’s both subtle and striking.
Like all Hoyas, macrophylla ‘Splash’ is not only ornamental but also air-purifying, helping to remove indoor toxins while releasing oxygen at night. Its easy-care nature makes it ideal for both new and experienced plant enthusiasts seeking a show-stopping yet forgiving houseplant.
