Philodendron 'Glad Hands' features large, glossy green leaves with deep, irregular lobes that resemble an open hand, giving the plant its name. The leaves can grow quite large, making this plant a dramatic addition to any indoor space. The foliage grows on long, sturdy stems that can be trained up a moss pole or allowed to sprawl, depending on your preference and space.

Care Guide

Light

'Glad Hands' thrives in medium to bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to scorch, while too little light can lead to leggy growth and reduced leaf size. A position near a window with a sheer curtain is typically ideal.

Water

This philodendron prefers the soil to be consistently moist but not soggy. Water it when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Reduce watering in the winter months when plant growth naturally slows. Over-watering can lead to root rot, so ensure your pot has good drainage.

Soil

Use a well-draining, peat-based potting soil that will hold some moisture but also allows excess water to drain away. Adding perlite or orchid bark can improve drainage and aeration around the roots.

Temperature and Humidity

Philodendron 'Glad Hands' prefers warm temperatures between 18 to 27 degrees Celsius and does not tolerate cold drafts well. It enjoys high humidity, typical of its native tropical environment. If your home is dry, especially in winter, use a humidifier or place the plant on a pebble tray with water to increase humidity around it.

Fertiliser

Feed the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every month during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the autumn and winter when growth slows down. Make sure to follow the recommended dilution rates on the fertiliser package to avoid over-fertilising, which can damage the plant.

Pruning and Training

Regular pruning can help maintain the shape of 'Glad Hands' and encourage bushier growth. You can also train this philodendron to climb up a moss pole or trellis, which supports its natural climbing tendencies and can lead to larger leaf growth.

Pests and Diseases

Keep an eye out for pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Regularly inspecting the leaves, especially the undersides, and wiping them with a damp cloth can help prevent infestations. If pests are detected, treat the plant with an appropriate insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Philodendron 'Glad Hands' is a captivating and relatively easy-to-care-for plant that can make a bold statement in any indoor garden. Its unique foliage and robust growth make it a favourite among houseplant collectors. With proper care, it can thrive and bring a lush, tropical feel to your home.
