Sansevieria zeylanica – Plant Description

Sansevieria zeylanica, often called the Ceylon Bowstring Hemp or Zeylanica Snake Plant, is a hardy and elegant species from the Asparagaceae family. Native to Sri Lanka and South Asia, it has long been grown as both an ornamental and a functional plant (historically, its fibrous leaves were used for making bowstrings, hence the name).

This species is distinguished by its long, upright sword-shaped leaves, which grow in dense clumps. The leaves are dark green with subtle, irregular bands of lighter grey-green, giving them a wavy, marbled appearance. Unlike some variegated Sansevieria cultivars such as ‘Laurentii’, Zeylanica maintains a clean, all-green look with no yellow margins, making it ideal for those who prefer a more natural, understated aesthetic.

Mature plants typically reach 60–90 cm in height indoors, forming dramatic, architectural clumps that suit both modern and traditional interiors. As with other snake plants, it is famously resilient and capable of withstanding neglect, low light, and drought, while still bringing strong visual impact.

Sansevieria zeylanica – Care Guide

Light

Extremely adaptable. Thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates low-light conditions, making it excellent for shaded corners and offices. Can handle some direct sun, though prolonged harsh light may cause leaf scorch.

Watering

Water sparingly. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. During spring and summer, this may mean watering every 2–3 weeks; in winter, reduce to once a month or less. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure, leading to root rot.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Best in 16–26°C. Protect from cold draughts and prolonged exposure below 10°C.

  • Humidity: Tolerant of dry indoor air; no additional humidity required.

Soil and Potting

Plant in a free-draining cactus or succulent mix. Choose a heavy pot to prevent tipping, as the tall leaves can make the plant top-heavy. Repot only when root-bound (every 2–3 years).

Feeding

Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Do not feed in autumn or winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove damaged or yellowing leaves at the base with a clean cut. Wipe foliage with a damp cloth occasionally to remove dust and highlight its natural patterns.

Growth and Maturity

A slow to moderate grower, producing new shoots from its rhizomes to form dense clumps over time. Mature specimens may occasionally flower, sending up spikes of small, fragrant, greenish-white blooms, though this is rare indoors.

Common Issues

  • Yellow or mushy leaves: Overwatering/root rot.

  • Wrinkled leaves: Extended drought – water thoroughly and allow to drain.

  • Pests: Rare, but mealybugs or spider mites may appear in dry conditions.

Background and Benefits

Sansevieria zeylanica has been grown for centuries in its native range, not only as an ornamental plant but also for its strong fibres. Today, it is prized as an easy-care houseplant that combines toughness with beauty. Like other snake plants, it is also valued for its air-purifying qualities, absorbing toxins and improving indoor air quality.
