Pteris cretica ‘Albo-lineata’, more commonly known as the Variegated Cretan Brake Fern, is a graceful fern species admired for its elegant, variegated fronds. Belonging to the Pteridaceae family, it is native to Europe, Africa, and Asia, where it grows in shaded, humid environments such as woodland floors and rocky crevices.
The plant forms neat, clumping rosettes of arching fronds that can reach 30–60 cm in length. Its distinctive feature is the creamy-white or silvery central stripe running down each pinna, contrasting beautifully against the surrounding deep green. The delicate texture of the fronds, combined with their elegant variegation, makes it a refined choice for brightening shaded spots indoors.
Compact and decorative, Pteris cretica Albo is often grown as a houseplant but can also thrive in greenhouses, terrariums, or shaded outdoor spaces in mild climates. Its air-purifying qualities add further value, helping to freshen the indoor environment while bringing a soft, natural elegance to interiors.
Prefers bright, indirect light or light shade. Too little light may reduce variegation, while strong direct sunlight can scorch the delicate fronds. Ideal near a north- or east-facing window.
Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Water when the surface of the compost feels just slightly dry. Use room-temperature water and avoid letting the plant sit in water, as this can cause root rot. Regularity is key – ferns dislike cycles of drought and overwatering.
Temperature: Best in 16–24°C. Protect from draughts and avoid prolonged cold below 10°C.
Humidity: Requires moderate to high humidity. Mist regularly, stand on a pebble tray, or grow in a terrarium to prevent the fronds from crisping.
Plant in a peat-free houseplant or fern compost that holds moisture but drains freely. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil and provide space for new growth.
Apply a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser once a month in spring and summer. Avoid strong feeds, which may damage the roots.
Remove old, yellowing, or damaged fronds at the base to keep the plant healthy and tidy. Regularly wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust.
‘Albo-lineata’ grows steadily into a low, arching clump of 30–45 cm in height and spread, though older specimens may reach up to 60 cm. Its compact size makes it well suited for smaller interiors and tabletops.
Brown, crispy fronds: Usually due to low humidity or underwatering.
Yellowing fronds: Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
Pests: Occasionally attracts scale or aphids; inspect regularly.
Pteris cretica is one of the most enduring fern species in cultivation, prized since the Victorian era for its decorative charm. The variegated ‘Albo-lineata’ adds extra elegance, with its white-veined fronds creating a refined, airy effect. Beyond its beauty, this fern helps filter indoor air, making it both attractive and beneficial.
