Sansevieria ‘Canary’ is a vibrant and modern cultivar of the classic Snake Plant, belonging to the Asparagaceae family. Like its relatives, it originates from West Africa, where snake plants thrive in arid and semi-arid conditions.
‘Canary’ is named for its striking golden-yellow leaves. Unlike most other Sansevieria varieties, which feature green leaves with variegated margins, ‘Canary’ is predominantly yellow with only narrow vertical streaks or margins of green. The upright, sword-shaped foliage forms tight rosettes, each leaf reaching 30–60 cm tall. Its bold colouring brings a bright, cheerful presence, making it a natural focal point in contemporary homes and offices.
Compact and architectural, Sansevieria ‘Canary’ has become a favourite among collectors of rare snake plants, as well as those seeking a low-maintenance but eye-catching indoor plant. Its combination of toughness and colour makes it an excellent choice for design-led interiors.
Best in bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant yellow colouring. Tolerates medium light, but in lower light conditions, leaves may develop more green. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which may bleach the golden tones.
Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In spring and summer, water every 2–3 weeks depending on conditions; in winter, reduce to once a month or less. Overwatering is the greatest risk, as it can cause root rot.
Temperature: Prefers 16–26°C. Protect from draughts and frost; avoid exposure below 10°C.
Humidity: Tolerates dry indoor air perfectly well; no extra misting is required.
Use a gritty, free-draining cactus or succulent compost. A heavy pot is recommended to balance the upright leaves. Repot every 2–3 years in spring if root-bound, but avoid oversized containers.
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.
Remove any damaged or faded leaves at the base with clean scissors. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and restore their glossy appearance.
A slow to moderate grower, producing new rosettes from its base. Mature plants remain relatively compact at 30–60 cm, making them perfect for tabletops, shelves, or floor groupings.
Yellow, mushy leaves: Almost always caused by overwatering.
Loss of bright colour: Usually due to insufficient light.
Pests: Rarely affected, though mealybugs or spider mites may appear in very dry environments.
Sansevieria species have been grown for centuries for their durability and symbolism of strength and protection. ‘Canary’ stands out as a modern cultivar, bringing vibrant golden foliage to interiors. Like other snake plants, it also has air-purifying qualities, filtering pollutants and improving indoor air quality.
