Native to Southeast Asia, including Thailand and Malaysia, it's prized by plant enthusiasts for its ornamental appeal and relative ease of care. This Hoya species is less commonly found in casual collections, making it a coveted specimen for Hoya aficionados.
Description
Hoya scortechinii features elongated, lance-shaped leaves that are medium to dark green, often with a slightly glossy appearance. The leaves are somewhat thinner compared to the succulent-like leaves of other Hoya species, giving them a delicate look. The plant's stems are vining and can grow quite long, making it suitable for hanging baskets or as a climbing plant with appropriate support.
The flowers of Hoya scortechinii are what truly set it apart. The blooms form in umbels, or clusters, of star-shaped, waxy flowers that are typically yellow or greenish-yellow, often with a red or burgundy center. These flowers not only add a splash of color but also emit a pleasant fragrance, making the plant even more desirable for indoor gardeners.
Care Guide
Lighting: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon, but excessive direct exposure can lead to leaf burn. An east or west-facing window is usually ideal.
Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Hoya scortechinii does not like to sit in waterlogged soil, so good drainage is essential. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so err on the side of underwatering rather than overwatering. Water less frequently during the winter months.
Humidity: Enjoys high humidity, typical of its tropical origins. Aim for humidity levels of 60% or higher. This can be achieved through regular misting, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water.
Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 29°C (65°F to 85°F). Protect it from temperatures below 15°C (59°F), as it is sensitive to cold.
Soil: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix. A mixture suitable for orchids or succulents, which includes perlite, bark, and coco coir, can provide the necessary drainage and aeration.
Feeding: Fertilize with a balanced, liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Pause fertilization during the dormant winter months.
Repotting: Hoya scortechinii prefers to be slightly root-bound, so repotting is only necessary every 2-3 years or when the plant has clearly outgrown its pot. Spring is the best time for repotting.
Pest and Disease Management: Keep an eye out for common pests such as mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. Regular inspections and early intervention with insecticidal soap or neem oil can help manage infestations. Ensure the plant is not over-watered and that there is good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
