Hoya 'Silver Moon' is a captivating variety of the Hoya family, celebrated for its distinctive foliage adorned with silvery variegation. This particular variety stands out with its decorative leaves and potential for stunning floral displays, making it a favored choice among Hoya collectors. Here’s a detailed description and care guide for Hoya 'Silver Moon':

Description

Hoya 'Silver Moon' features small to medium-sized, oval-shaped leaves that are deep green with prominent silver variegation. The variegation typically appears as splashes or splotches, giving each leaf a unique pattern. Like many Hoyas, 'Silver Moon' is a vining plant, making it ideal for hanging baskets or as a climbing plant on trellises. It produces clusters of star-shaped flowers, which are typically pink or white and may have a sweet fragrance, enhancing its ornamental appeal.

Care Guide

Light

Hoya 'Silver Moon' thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the variegated leaves. A spot near a window that receives filtered light, such as through a sheer curtain, is ideal.

Watering

Water the plant when the top couple of inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Ensure the plant is not left sitting in water to avoid root rot. Hoya 'Silver Moon' prefers to dry out slightly between waterings. During the winter, reduce the watering frequency to allow the plant to rest.

Humidity

High humidity levels, around 60% or higher, are ideal for this Hoya. Utilize a humidifier, mist the plant regularly, or place it on a pebble tray filled with water to maintain adequate humidity, especially in dry indoor environments.

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. Hoya 'Silver Moon' is sensitive to cold and should be protected from drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Soil

Use a well-draining potting mix designed for epiphytic plants. A mix containing perlite, orchid bark, and peat is suitable. This type of soil ensures adequate drainage and aeration, which is crucial for the health of the roots.

Fertilisation

Fertilize every four to six weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. During the winter, reduce feeding to once every two months or cease altogether depending on the plant's growth.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune as needed to control growth and encourage bushier foliage. Avoid cutting off the peduncles (flower stalks), as Hoyas can rebloom from the same stalks over multiple seasons. Regularly cleaning the leaves with a soft cloth can also help prevent dust accumulation and pest infestations.

Pest Control

Keep an eye out for pests such as mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Treat any infestations promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap, making sure to thoroughly cover all areas of the plant, especially the undersides of leaves.

Propagation

Hoya 'Silver Moon' can be propagated via stem cuttings. Take a cutting with several nodes, let it dry for a day to form a callus, then plant it in a suitable potting mix. Keep the soil moist and warm to encourage rooting.
